Community Service by DPMS FMUB

On September 13, 2024, the Doctoral Program in Medical Science at FMUB held a community service event at SMP PGRI 4 Malang (Jl. Ki Ageng Gribig No.44, Madyopuro, Kec. Kedungkandang, Malang City, East Java 65138). The activity carried the theme “Awareness on the Dangers of Smoking and Guidance on Nicotine Addiction for Junior High School Students in Kedungkandang, Malang.” We were warmly welcomed by the school principal, who was very pleased that his students were given the opportunity to learn about the health risks of smoking.

In this event, the Doctoral Program in Medical Science of FMUB (led by the Head of the Study Program, Prof. Agustina Tri Endharti, SSi., PhD, along with the team) provided education on the dangers of smoking. We visited SMP PGRI 4 Malang to deliver a presentation by Dr. Ungky Agus Setyawan, Sp.P(K), entitled “Living a Healthy Life Without Smoking.” Dr. Ungky explained the types of cigarettes currently available and the various health risks associated with both inhaling and smoking cigarettes. He also shared strategies to avoid the temptation to smoke and offered tips on how to quit smoking. As a pulmonologist, Dr. Ungky provided free consultations to teachers and students, emphasizing that passive smokers (those exposed to cigarette smoke in a household with smokers) also face specific health risks.
